Global perspectives on health – China

Accelerate has been profiling global markets based on population studies.

I am sure that everyone has heard that we are an ageing population, however, you may not have realised just how significant the shortfall in clinical and care staff will be in the near future.

In some countries, such as China, ageing is occurring at a much earlier socioeconomic stage than in Europe and therefore provides us with some insight into how a healthcare system may have to change to cope with the increasing pressure of an ageing population.

It is estimated that there is only enough nursing home provision for 2% aged people in China. There have been media reports of waiting lists of thousands for a single care home bed. It is not surprising that there is a huge push to increase nurse numbers to 2.86 million by 2015 and in-home nursing organisations have begun in earnest since 2007.
