Floors: A touchy subject?

Published in Blog

Recent research has seen the team at Accelerate Associates looking at flooring in healthcare facilities. The aim of the research was to better understand items that are regularly wheeled throughout hospitals and any potential for the spread of infection and dirt tracking that this might cause.

One of the team here at Accelerate has previously worked as a product manager for a manufacturer of contract interior flooring and matting and so we had a keen interest in what the research might highlight.

The main respondents in the primary research phase of the project were Infection Prevention and Control personnel; working for a range of NHS Trusts throughout the UK. Most infection control employees are nurses who have then gone on to specialise in infection control – a key issue for all healthcare facilities in an age of increasing antibiotic resistance.

The research highlighted some interesting facts about the spread of infections and how this is to be prevented. With regards to flooring within hospitals, while the respondents where very keen to stress that it should be disinfected and cleaned regularly; it is not viewed as a significant risk with regards to the spread of infection.

For the most part it was felt that although shoes and wheels can walk and track dirt through a hospital, if the floors are cleaned and disinfected thoroughly and regularly then the risk of infection is minimal. The rationale for this is that, for bacteria and viruses to spread, people have to touch the infected area and then put their hands in their mouths. As floors are not a common ‘touch point’ there is little risk of any microbes infecting patients and visitors; especially in buildings with strict cleaning regimes.

Testimonial

“Accelerate produced a fantastic report within a few weeks, containing a lot of detailed and useful information that will certainly help us to drive Recap Health forward in the market. In addition to delivering the intelligence we needed, we were delighted to also receive contact details from a number of NHS organisations who are interested in speaking with us further.”

Steve Pashley, Managing Director, Health2Works Limited.

The Challenge

Developed in the mental health and community services sector, Health2Works required a detailed understanding of the potential market need for Recap Health in the acute market, specifically focusing on use in outpatient care.

Our Approach

We developed a research plan utilising both primary and secondary research.

Depth interviews were conducted with clinical and management level respondents focusing principally on Patient Information Leads, Quality Improvement Leads and IT / Digital Health leads.

Interviews ascertained expert opinions regarding potential market need for Recap Health, use of patient information and intelligence regarding the likelihood of Recap Health to improve patient self-care.

Secondary data analysis identified outpatient appointment numbers by specialty as well as demographic trends. Accelerate also analysed outpatient appointments by first or follow up, profiling the pattern of outpatient support by specialty.

Results

A total of 11 NHS Trusts were surveyed in depth, with quantitative data gathered from a further 8 NHS Trusts regarding their normal use and volume of patient information.

A detailed report was produced for Health2Works profiling the points in the care pathway where patient information is used, specialties that have a higher reliance on patient information and intelligence regarding the use of digital media with and for patients.

An additional benefit of the research was that 4 organisations requested to learn more about Recap Health and are now continuing their discussions direct with the Health2Works team.

The Brief

Accelerate Associates was commissioned by SwabTech to undertake a market assessment study to define; the UK and international market size and opportunity for automatic swab washing, understand the clinical disciplines most likely to use automated swab washing and determine the likely decision-making group structure and relevant communications and messaging routes to access key stakeholders.

Our Approach

Depth interviews were conducted with clinical and management level respondents focusing principally on transfusion and operating department practitioners, anaesthetists and theatre nurses. Questionnaires were designed to procure expert opinions regarding the potential market for the product, market needs and intelligence regarding the supply chain, market size and pricing for an automatic swab washer. Secondary research was also conducted to identify existing information on patient blood management, intra-operative cell salvage and manual swab washing.

Results

Accelerate Associates provided SwabTech with an in depth report detailing the market size for intra-operative cell salvage and swab washing in the UK and internationally. The research focussed on the types of surgical specialities and procedures routinely using intra-operative cell salvage. In addition, depth questionnaires enabled a picture of the decision and buying group structures to be ascertained alongside marketing and communications intelligence to provide detail on key drivers for adopting the automatic swab washer.
